Spent the weekend with Mark on the Relentless fishing deep water kings. We had Salmonator Jeff and Mike aboard on Saturday.
Water was sloppy and didn't match the forecast but it was a very nice day of fishing. Kings from 17-22 pounds and no coho for us...
Sunday we had Ralph and Jerry aboard and the weather was better. We were a bit slower than most to get the fish rolling but it all came together eventually.
Had a funny situation mid day...
Trolling against the current and line starts slipping off the reels during a turn. I went to one side and gave the drag a click more. Running Tekota 600's and 30 lb. mono. Stopped that one from slipping...Went to the other side and gave it 2 clicks more and the line is still peeling off...Pow! The rod holder on the Scotty snapped off and the rod shot off like a shot from a cannon leaving me open mouthed...
Mark was seriously bummed as that setup had a brand new reel just purchased on Friday, Tekota 600LC mounted on a G Loomis STR 1265C. All of his salmon sticks are the same and it's about a 500 dollar hit!
Mark made a few comments on the radio about the loss and we were talking about replacing the set up and the monetary disadvantages of pursuing our passion for a while.
Slowly the fishing mood returned to almost normal with a shadow of despair over the loss... Again, finish out our kings with the same grade of fish to 22 pounds and head inside to look for the elusive coho...
While we are hop scotching our way back to port, Mark hears a call on the radio....Rod and reel retrieved, if you can identify the set up, it will be returned. Mark is nearly speechless and blubbers out a broken reply..."I can't thank you enough."... We get the vital info and talk about meeting him back at the dock..
While fooling around for no love on the coho I am at the helm and see a boat running in matching the description of the guy who retrieved the rod and hailed him. He responds and stops by and hands off the precious cargo... What can you say about that? Divine intervention?? John on the Striper says he had a mishap as well. A run in with a whale tore his downrigger ball and terminal gear off the port side rigger.
Mark decides to make a gift as we run back to Westport of a down rigger ball, a bungee, and a release clip. By the time we get back, John on the Striper has cleaned up and rolled out. The phone number he gave us appears to be wrong...I found his boat from the slip number he gave us and made a deposit into his starboard storage box behind the helm.
Just want to say that decent people are all around us and good deeds do not require reward but sometimes a gesture is in order! Thanks very much to John for his honesty and willingness to save the day. I saw a BD sticker on your boat, and hope you see this here.
Thank you very much from Captain Mark, Dave B., and all the crew. You made our day....
A couple of pics...
Final note:
Thanks to Kevin on the Fishin Luhrs and the other sports out there that keep the network humming. It's a great thing to see the camaraderie and selflessness that leads to a greater group success.
Beee out!
