Snowshoeing with David and Mark- White Pass

Did a little snow shoeing trip with Mark and young David, David's first time in snowshoes that he inherited from Mark's son Jacob. MSR Tykers, that are a smaller version of the MSR snowshoes that I have had for years.
We left Mark's house early and headed past Mt. Rainier over White Pass to see if there were any elk at the Oak Creek wildlife viewing station. It was quite a drive, taking more than 2 hours and fruitless once we arrived. No animals at the feeding station.
We then decided to head tup above Rim Rock lake where I have hunted elk to see if there was adequate snow to hit the trail on snow shoes. Well, there wasn't quite enough and the road ended at a place that was blocked to allow snowmobile access. We then decided to head back up to White Pass and see what we could find there. We found a trail just East of the Ski area and got suited up and started up the trail.
The trail  wasn't too steep and had plenty of nice snow. David was pretty funny...He was having a great time wanting to be the leader and occasionally falling down in the fresh powder. Kids will be kids and I was proud of his progress for a 6 year old.
We continued up and up the hill until he crumpled and had to be carried part of the way back down...All in all a great experience! Mark, as always, was great. He takes great care and attention with David. He is a great friend and has a gentle side with children that I admire. Once we made it back to the car, it was time for a nice lunch. We had great sandwiches, some different cheeses, some elk sausage, as well as fruit, coffee, and of course, water.
Finished with lunch, we headed back towards home. Along the way we were delighted with seeing over 200 elk in different spots along the way with a great bunch in Packwood.
A wonderful day with my son and a great friend. Thanks Mark!

  1. Very nice! Little David is getting the hang of all this 'man stuff'. :-)
